‘Building our Community’ project
We’ve partnered with construction specialists, G Oakley and Sons Ltd. to launch ‘Building our Community’ – a brand new project that will see participants create a final STEAM art piece that will be on display in our community room when our brand-new Science Capital opens in 2020.
We’ve been so lucky to secure £5.5m to design and build our Science Capital, due to open in 2020. We’ve been working closely with G Oakley and Sons Ltd. throughout our Science Capital build and are excited we can offer such an exciting opportunity to local people in our community.
Why?
‘Building our Community’ is part of Techniquest Connect, which will introduce you to our exciting new Science Capital project and provide valuable insight into the world of construction through our construction lead, G Oakley and Sons Ltd.
Sponsored by Oakley, ‘Building our Community’ means we can work collaboratively to encourage diversity across both industries and continue in our mission is to embed science into Welsh culture. We’ve been doing tonnes of work within our local communities to not only get people interested in STEM, but to solidify ourselves as the trusted, definitive voice for science and technology communication in Wales.
STEM or STEAM?
As part of our wider mission to make STEM accessible for everyone, we know the importance of becoming STEAM-focused. But what’s the difference? Becoming a STEAM organisation means we’re able to be more creative and accessible in our approach, appealing to a wider audience and attracting individuals who may not have a direct interest in STEM.
This rare opportunity will give participants the opportunity to be part of a significant milestone for STEM education in Wales, and involved with one of the biggest developments in Techniquest history. The project also allows for valuable insight into the field of construction work and we are pleased to offer this opportunity to the wider community.
The Project
We’ll be tasking participants to create a final piece of art that will sit in our brand-new community room when our Science Capital opens in 2020. For us its important to create a strong link between our local area and the Science Capital, so we’d like the piece created to focus on this continually growing relationship.
You’ll be introduced to the wider Techniquest team, who have been pivotal to the development in the Science Capital project and who can offer sound knowledge of what to expect during the 2020 launch. You’ll also be introduced to members of the G Oakley and Sons Ltd. team, who will assist you during your short monthly site visits with us. You will access the site during agreed times, have the opportunity to learn and develop your knowledge and capture photography of your progress each visit for your own portfolio.
Get involved
The project will run for approximately 6 months, and your final piece will be launched at G Oakley and Sons Ltd. community day, Summer 2020. Your piece will sit proudly in our community room for all to admire and enjoy during their visit to Techniquest. Our community room will continue to be for the community, by the community for future generations.
We’re looking for enthusiastic participants from our local communities in the Grangetown, Butetown and Riverside areas to take part in ‘Building our Community’. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of something right on your doorstep and get involved with an exciting project to hit Cardiff Bay in 2020. Participants must be over 16 years of age to take part in the project.
