Over three days in March, more than 20 south Wales primary schools visited Techniquest to attend the World of Work careers event, funded by Edina Trust.
Hundreds of pupils spoke to professionals from local companies like KLA Newport, Welsh Water and SparkLabs Cymru, and got hands-on with demonstrations from the South Wales Police and Centregrate Engineering.
We spoke to some of the represented companies to find out why they decided to take part.
Becky from Wardell Armstrong said: “We want to inspire generations of ecologists. Kids love nature but not many realise that there are careers in the field […] it’s been great!”
Laura Crowley from Trallwn Primary School said: “Our theme now is ‘bright sparks’ so this event ties in nicely to what we’re teaching in school. The staff have been really helpful, and it’s been brilliant for the children.”
Angelina from NHS Wales said: “We’re promoting healthcare science, and demonstrating different jobs within it. We want to encourage more kids to pursue a role in the field.”
We believe this was valuable step in increasing the next generation’s science capital — and we can’t wait to host more aspiring STEM professionals in the future.
